By now, you made first contact with Prvstorage app and, I guess, you liked the ideea of having you own personal or family cloud storage.
Problem: How do I access my cloud storage from outside my local network? I'm far away from home, I have Internet access and
I need to backup some files or save somewhere else those videos that got me with my phone storage full. How do I save/backup my files with Prvstorage?
Solution: Set up port forwarding for Prvstorage before getting in that situation.
Prvstorage is a website on a web server, your own web server. At this point it is enclosed within your local network and nobody from the Internet can connect to it.
No matter it is Prvstorage, a mail or game server, to be able to connect to it from Internet, the same rules apply. You need to setup port forwarding on your home router.
Port forwarding
1. Read the manual of the router through which you are connected to the Internet and look for a way to conect to it, from a device connected to the local network, using a web browser.
2. If you managed to connect to the router inteface, look for a tab/button/link to Port forwarding rules. You can always look on the Internet for guides specific to your home router.
You can be sure you're not the first person to need port forwarding on your type of router.
3. Now try to set new rules to forward all exterior requests on port 80 to the internal IP of Prvstorage, port 80. Save the new rule.
4. Test the new setting by trying to access your external IP from a device not connected to local network.
5. To find out your external IP just search for "whats my IP".
Your external IP might be an IPv4 (four groups of numbers 0 to 255 for instance 185.166.188.226) or an IPv6 (eight groups of four hexadecimal digits,
for instance 2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334 that is usually shortened to 2001:db8::8a2e:370:7334 - regards to Wikipedia)
For IPv4 just try http://yourIPv4/index.php. For IPv6 just try http://[yourIPv6]/index.php. Beware: IPv6 address must be enclosed within square brackets - [IPv6].
Some ISP periodically change your IP address, and this might pose a problem if you want to reach your server from outside your home network.
To secure access to Prvstorage, regardless of ISP constantly changing your external IP, you might need to take a look at
dynamic DNS or DDNS and setup one for your server.
