Privacy: There are lots of online storage services, some quite cheap, but I don't really know how private these are. From my point of view there cannot be a more private storage space then my own HDD/SDD, somewhere on my property. And, if you want to encrypt your HDD/SSD, well, it's in your power to do it.
Power consumption: For bigger storage space you come to pay a lot in one year. Finally, I have come to realize that as long as I can control my private storage hardware (as for powering on/of, remotely) having a personal storage hardware it's not expensive in terms of power consumption.
Cheep hardware: A simple 2bay NAS, diskless, costs around $200. A second hand Intel core 3rd generation (low consumption) PC costs under $100 and you may stuff it with HDDs of your choice. I assure you that a low lvl NAS holds less compute power then Intel Core 3rd generation.
Access from everywhere: This app works like a personal Internet website. It is accessible from a local network, as a shared folder, or using a browser. With a few tweaks it can be accessed from anywhere in the world as long as you have Internet access.
